Hey Ya’ll | The Three Little Bears

Once upon a time, a handsome man met a beautiful woman on a blind date. The man and woman fell in love. The handsome man gave the beautiful woman a teddy bear and a proposal. She accepted both.

Only if…

Last week, my husband, Jeff, and I attended the funeral of a dear friend who died unexpectedly. During her Celebration of Life ceremony and the montage of photographs that illustrated a life well-lived, service to others, treasured friendships, and family memories, it reminded me of a recent conversation with a colleague who prefaced their life’s ambitions with, “only if.”

I like small businesses

Having operated a small business for sixty years, I appreciate how difficult it is to develop a customer relationship. It takes time to build a reputation for ethics and quality and a profitable base.

(Not So) Common Sense | My dogs hate me

Well, maybe the word “hate” is a little strong. They’re too sweet to hate anyone. But they’re mad at me, of that I am sure. You see, this past weekend in Atlanta was beautiful and sunny, perfect for those with spring fever to work outside getting the yard ready for outdoor living as only we in the South know how to do it.

Letter to the Editor

I’m writing to thank Congressman Rob Woodall for voting “Yes” on the most recently passed Omnibus Budget bill.  Certainly, there were things in the bill I did not like, and things I wish could have been included.  And I’m sure the congressman felt the same way.  But there was more good than bad in my opinion.  And there was one particularly important part of the bill that I know the congressman supported.  That was the $414m in increased funding for Alzheimer’s disease research.

Finding Joy

Don’t you hate it when you misplace your car keys? Reading glasses? Wallet? Or, have lost the joy in your life? Joy, not easily found in your right coat pocket, on top of your head, or on a store sales counter, can be found where you least expect it. It’s in the tiniest grin from a baby; it’s the spark of your loved one’s eyes in their sideways glance; it’s in your work; it’s down in your heart.

Litterers

Upon arriving from Atlanta, I caught a taxicab from International Falls to Fort Francis, Ontario to an inlet, from where bush pilots fly fishing enthusiasts out to isolated rivers and lakes, to catch trophy muskies, northern pike, and other freshwater fish.

Hey Y’all | Back from the Light

We have been in a nightmare. We have all had the flu, but Snell was harder than James or me. The doctor told us that the flu shot helped about 10-20% of the people who took it, but this strain that is so powerful wasn’t fazed by the inoculation. I know some people who have had this mess, and it has been devastating.
