The key to getting in shape: START!

“What is the best way to get in shape?”

Getting in shape is not as difficult as it might sound. Start something. Anything. Put on your shoes and walk out your front door. Go to the park and walk, try an exercise video, join a gym, take a group fitness class or get out there and ride your bike. There is no one correct way and everyone is different. Make sure that you pick activities that YOU enjoy. We are more likely to repeat an activity that is fun.

You need a goal. Have a big goal way off on the horizon to aim towards, but in the meantime you need to set small attainable goals for yourself. It could be how far you walk or the number of times you exercise in one week. Having a goal is very important. It enables focus. It helps you measure your progress. Again, have fun. Play little games with yourself. Find your inner competitor. Remember no one can push you like YOU.

Be aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Stop eating processed foods that are made in a laboratory. If it has a TV commercial it probably isn’t very good for you. Do not eat out. Eating out can completely sabotage your efforts. Planning your meals and cooking at home gives you control over the ingredients and amounts that go into your food. For instance, you can limit the amount of added sugar you consume daily, as well as salt and fat. Also, you can control your portions. Restaurants sometimes give you two to three times the serving size you need.

Lift some weights. Start out with lifting your own body weight with exercises like squats, lunges and push ups. From there graduate to free weights. Weight training has multiple benefits. Having a higher muscle percentage fires up your metabolism and it ups and helps to maintain bone density. This is important for women as we age.

The hardest part about starting a fitness program is STARTING. Get going! You can do it!
