Noteworthy past September Events
• William Howard Taft, 27th President of the United States was born on September 15, 1857.

• President McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901.

• Summer ends and autumn begins in September.

• From the October 1, 1902 issue of the Gwinnett Journal “Mrs. Hardy will open a boarding house in the Simmons Building.”

• Citizen Day and Constitution Day are observed on September 17.

• From the September 10, 1903 issue of The News-Herald: “The public school in Lawrenceville opened on September 7, 1903 with 140 pupils present.”

• From the September 1, 1904 issue of The News-Herald: “Ever since A. Lincoln was inaugurated President Wiley W. Webb of Goodwins has kept a fire burning in his fireplace.”

• The Second Baptist Church was dedicated on September 18, 1921; it later became known as the Eastside Baptist Church.

• The September 13, 1945 issue of The News-Herald reported: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Tuggle of Dacula celebrated the return of their son Pfc. John L. Tuggle Sunday with a big dinner. Pfc Tuggle served overseas for seven months; he was stationed in Italy.

• The News-Herald September 12, 1965 issue reported: “Genesco employed 675 people; Herbert Corley is plant manager and Horace Lovin personnel manager. There are 57 plants in 17 states.”

Gwinnett County Historical Society
The Society will meet on September 16, 2013 at 7:30pm. Meetings are held at the Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville.

Nurse Navigator Named
Gretchen Hayward was appointed Nurse Navigator at Gwinnett Medical Center; she joins Donna Stoudenmire as they work to support and guide breast cancer patients through the diagnostic process and to assist them in the connection between GMC patients and available cancer support programs and other resources. Gretchen and Donna are nationally certified to serve as navigators by the National Consortium of Breast Centers.

Porter on Statewide Council
Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter has been elected secretary of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia. Danny Porter has been with the Gwinnett County District Attorneys’ office since 1981.

Congratulations:

• Gwinnett Extended Care Center of Gwinnett Medical Center has been listed as a top nursing home by US News and World Report.

• Gwinnett Public Schools that were selected as Schools of Excellence are Head Elementary, Harris Elementary, Mulberry Elementary and Osborne Middle. These schools will receive a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas and a visit from the state school superintendent John Barge.

• Governor Deal reappointed Ben Satterfield to the Georgia Consumer Advisory Board. Ben Satterfield, Sales Manager at AllGood Pest Solutions in Lawrenceville is chairman of the Gwinnett History and Preservation Board.

SAT Prep
A free SAT Prep class sponsored by College Nannies and Tutors will be held on September 17 from 5 until 8pm. The class will be at Gwinnett Fire Station 7, 3343 Bunten Road, Duluth. For information call 678-259-0232. Those planning to take the class should call at least one week prior to September 17.

Staycation Road Trip
Eatonton, Georgia is about an hour from Gwinnett; it is in Putnam County once the Dairy Capital of Georgia and the home of the Joel Chandler Harris Museum and not much traffic. The Old School House History Museum at 305 Madison Street in Eatonton is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 until 5; on Saturdays and Sundays the museum is open from 2-4pm. • The Lilburn Daze Festival will be held on October 12.

• The Georgia Educators Museum groundbreaking ceremony will be held on September 29, 3pm at the proposed building location on Falcon Parkway in Flowery Branch, Georgia directly across the road from the Atlanta Falcon multimillion dollar office and practice complex.

Masonic BBQ
The Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge held the annual BBQ on Saturday August 18 at the Lawrenceville Lodge on South Perry Street. Some who assisted in this event were Dave Rusnak, Ron Denney and Worthy Master Jeff Castle. Allen McKelvey was on the clean up detail.
