On February 9, 2019, the Girls JV High School basketball team at Sugar Hill Christian Academy (SHCA) celebrated their first State Championship after a long and challenging season. They defeated the first place Region Champions, Open Bible Chris-tian School on Feb. 8 at the GCAA Semifinal matchup and then went on to defeat Grace Christian School - Fayetteville, the following day in the championship game with the score of 25-15.
“It’s a first for us,” Athletic Director Courtney Simmons said of their high school basketball program.
According to Simmons, SHCA’s overall high school program, which features a hybrid, partially online curriculum, was instituted only a year and a half ago. And considering SHCA’s Stallions faced larger, more established teams, their win is even sweeter.
“Our High school is only a year and a half years old at this point, but we pulled together during a challenging season with numerous injuries,” Simmons said. “We actually had to draft a 7th grader and an 8th grader from our girls’ middle school team.”
As underdogs on the rise, the team is exhilarated by their new-found success – perhaps none so much as Katelyn Dilbeck who was named Most Valuable Player for the season.
Of the win, she said, “We had a long, hard season as a team, but we came out stronger than ever.”
Dilbeck believes the Championship win is just the first of many to come.
“I can’t wait for next season,” Dilbeck said. “[Winning the championship] has been a great motivation!”
And according to Simmons, motivation comes in no short supply for the JV Girls basketball team.
Simmons explained, “Overall, it was not just their skill, but also their determination and diligence that paid off.”
Located at 4600 Nelson Brogdon Blvd., SHCA is a K-12 faith-based institution.
