Most of Gwinnett’s scholars are part of a nationwide group of 700 students who are recipients of National Achievement Scholarships, most of which are a single payment of $2,500. Parkview High’s Milan Ravenell is part of approximately 100 other scholars recipients of the corporate-sponsored Achievement Scholarship awards. Corporate organizations generally provide awards for finalists who are children of their employees, residents of communities the company serves, or have plans to pursue majors or careers the grantor wishes to encourage. More than 160,000 students entered the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program by requesting consideration in the competition when they took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) as high school juniors. During the fall of 2012 as students began their junior year, semifinalists were designated within geographic regions based on the highest scores in the states that make up each region.
They advanced to the finalist level in the competition by filling out a detailed application, presenting a record of high academic performance throughout high school, being endorsed and recommended by a school official from their local high school, writing an essay, and earning SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance. Achievement Scholar honorees were selected from the finalists judged to have the strongest record of accomplishments.
