Ending on a high note

loraleebeardMy regular visits to Our Gwinnett County School clients leaves me amazed at the level of cleanliness in our schools. Grayson High School, my “home school” is a stellar example . However during our recent time there, the unthinkable happened:no air condition in July. While the county staff scrambled to repair, I thought about ancient times when there was poor air conditioning and cell phones were really large.

Over at North Forke Plantation in Grayson, another way to deal with heat, the NF Barracuda swim team, is in the midst of an action packed season led by head coach Karen Tate. Karen began competitive swimming at age 5 and has passed her talent to children Merritt (2013 GHS graduate), and sons Brock and Rhead.

Hayden Cone, was one of our easiest photo subjects this summer and she also has outstanding family ties with brother Bo Cone, a UGA student, Swim Coach at North Forke , 2013 Grayson High School graduate.

Another way to celebrate summer is Grandma Camp, held since 2007 by Grayson artist Diana Thurman for her granddaughters and a select few other girls. This year, they headed out to Fore All Seasons barn in Loganville where they took turns riding Donovan. 2013 camp participants are sisters Simone and Ruby Manzari from Weston, Florida, Anna Mason, age 13 from Ohio and Maggie Thurman, age 12 of Snellville. Assistant Honorary Grand-mother Jane Hersee- Pittasis, owner of Whimsical Wax Wonders candles, flew in from Chicago to assistant in shooting beebee guns, rafting, candle making, and the occasional trip down Memory Lane.

The traditional Magic Moment image of a select group of varsity football seniors was taken early in summer and included Lane Seale, Nate Peters, Austin Hamilton, Aares McCall and Jaiquan Brown. The season is a book to be written but the Athletes did channel the classic Ram toughness.

My father age 85 and great nephew age 3 both dress up whenever possible as Superman and therefore I could appreciate Peachtree Ridge Senior Hunter Baldwin’s rendition of Clark Kent in his moment of metamorphis. Hunter, son of Cat and Michael Baldwin, is involved in DECA as well as acting. He looks back fondly on his career making role as “the Prince” in his 5th grade production of Cinderella.

Melinah Felix and Stephen Day are rising seniors and both involved in Mill Creek High School 's latest great interest, the "Hawkapella"s, an a Capella singing group. David Dennis, who transferred over from Dacula High School started the group which sings at local events but hopes to begin competing.

A brilliant way to avoid heat is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Our Summer Business Manager Specialist, Lindsay Waddell, (who is a Media Specialist at Morris Brandon Elementary School during the other seasons) has been training for a year to make the climb by running and hiking. She is shown here on our winter backdrop reenacting the thrill of the climb. Brother Justin and Father Jim will be accompanying her. Her only concern is “altitude” (such as a deep sea divers “only concern” is water). And that’s ending on a high (pun intended) note.
