One of four adults has two or more chronic health conditions. Health risk behaviors are unhealthy behaviors you can change. Four of these health risk behaviors—lack of exercise or physical activity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and drinking too much alcohol—cause much of the illness, suffering, and early death related to chronic diseases and conditions. People in this country die everyday from preventable diseases. It is part of my job to assist people in choosing healthier options for their lives. Sometimes my clients take back control of their lives and the proof is in the prescriptions they no longer fill. It brings my heart such joy to share this success story with you.
Lib came to me after her doctor advised her to drop some weight. She had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and elevated liver enzymes. We decided to make her goal not specifically about weight, but rather to get rid of her medicines.
The byproduct of her focus and hard work towards her health goal was an amazing transformation for Lib inside and out.
She took the challenge of altering her eating habits head on. “I totally changed the way I cooked. I looked for healthy options for good tasting food.” Lib also found that varying her workouts, branching out and trying new things suited her. “I never have liked exercise, but Kelly challenged me to find something that I enjoyed besides eating. I tried spin and I like it. I tried Pilates and I enjoyed it. For the first time in my life I look forward to exercising. I actually climbed to the top of Stone Mountain!”
Lib’s good example has carried over to her family. Her daughter started walking and running with her and has now lost 37 pounds. Her husband has gotten on board with the healthy eating choices to help keep his cholesterol in check.
“My self esteem has sky rocketed and best of all I now take NO diabetic or blood pressure medicine! 52 is the new 30 for me!” Lib did the work and she reached her goal. She lost 40 pounds and regained her health and wellbeing. She credits her faith for giving her the strength.
Find your source of strength. You are NOT powerless against these preventable diseases. It takes patience and dedication to change. You have to WANT it. Lib is proof that it can be done. You can do it, too! Get to work!
