9 Tips for Home Heating Safety & Efficiency

These nine simple tips will make sure your family’s comfort and safety is at its peak before the coldest weather arrives.

1. Change your filter. Swapping it will help your system “breathe” when in operation. When clogged, it’s increasing your energy bills. Every 60-90 days is acceptable, but if your pets shed, closer to 30 days is recommended.

Choose the cheapest filters from home improvement stores, unless family members have allergies. Cheap filters catch the bulk of the dust and dander just fine, saving you big bucks over high-end filters.

2. Don’t block vents. Furniture, curtains, and rugs should not obstruct floor vents. Your system needs air flow from those vents, and when blocked, your home won’t heat properly. If pet hair is collect-ing around your returns, vacuum to keep it out of your ductwork.

3. Understand your Thermostat. Are you leaving your programmable thermostat on a single temperature all season? We’ll help you program your thermostat to perform at its peak!

4. Help Your Heat Pump. With fall leaves dropping every-where, make sure your heat pump is clear of leaves and debris. Trim bushes and trees 18”-24″ from your outdoor unit for proper air flow.

6. Wrap your Water Heater in a Blanket. Get an insulated blanket from a home store and keep the warmth in the tank instead of seeping out.

7. Be Prepared for Fire. Do you have a fire extinguisher? Fire is one of the highest threats to your home, and having an extinguisher is convenient and affordable.

8. Know your Water Shut-off. Freezing weather can cause pipes to burst. Do you know where your water shut-off valve is? Do you have the proper tool to shut it off? We help customers identify these critical elements of your house!

9. Get a Heating Tune-up. There are many benefits to a complete 21-point precision tune-up, but one is critical: Combustion Analysis. This is the *only* way to identify hairline cracks in your gas furnace that may result in an odorless carbon monoxide gas leak.

Whether you choose our company or another, it’s imperative that you get an annual heating tune-up and make sure the company uses a Combustion Analyzer to measure any leaks.

If you want to schedule your $68 Heating Tune-Up (first system) before the big winter freeze hits, call us at 470-223-1176, and we’ll send our HVAC experts to your home!
