Message boards are up and flaggers are ready to direct traffic as drivers shift onto the new detour alignment after the evening rush hour on Monday.
“We recognize the impact our projects have on drivers and we appreciate their patience,” said Alan Chapman, the director of the Gwinnett Department of Transportation.
“We are very fortunate to have County SPLOST funds to improve traffic safety along S.R. 316,” he said. “The contractor is working hard to make up time lost to the recent rains.”
C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. began construction of the grade-separated interchange and bridge in fall 2019. The construction is expected to be complete by early 2022. The project is funded by the 2017 SPLOST program.
The new five-lane bridge will include dual westbound left-turn lanes, a single eastbound turn lane and through lanes. The new interchange also will have full access ramps eastbound and westbound, as well as a collector-distributor road with direct access to Sugarloaf Parkway. The project also includes traffic signal upgrades, sidewalks, curb and gutter and retaining walls.
On Monday, overnight flagging operators will help drivers with the new traffic pattern. Drivers will remain on the new alignment until the shift to permanent bridge in 2022. Please drive alertly while navigating the interchange.
