At the luncheon, a check for $2,296 was given to the Co-op through funds raised by the Give Hunger the Boot Challenge – a spirited competition between the cities of Snellville and Grayson; $1,296 was raised in donations and $1,000 was donated by the GECC. Another $165 came in after the event. Snellville collected $849 Wednesday, while Grayson collected $447.
The competition, suggested by Grayson Mayor Allison Wilkerson, kicked off earlier this month and asks residents from both cities to donate food to the Co-op at various drop of points in Grayson and Snellville.
Also at the luncheon, it was revealed Snellville has collected 849 food items Wednesday, while Grayson has collected 447, putting Snellville ahead.
“There really isn’t a loser in all of this,” Wilkerson said, pointing out all of the food collected goes toward a good cause.
Created by Snellville Council Member Dave Emanuel and his wife Kathy, Give Hunger the Boot has set up drop-off stations for food and will deliver it to the Co-Op on Jan. 19 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The donations will be counted and the winner declared. The loser will have to build a parade float and Council Members of both cities will ride on the float in the Snellville Days and Grayson Day parades.
“There are people who have an ongoing need,” Emanuel said. “This is a need that is 24-7, 365.”
The challenge is open to residents of both cities so anyone can participate by dropping off canned goods or dried foods at Snellville City Hall, 2342 Oak Road, Grayson City Hall, 475 Grayson Parkway, or any of the other drop off points established by the cities.
