Scholarship Named For Gwinnett Residents: Sorority Awards Inaugural McGruder-Smith Scholarship

LAWRENCEVILLE,GA - Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's ("UAO") inaugural McGruder-Smith Undergraduate Scholarship Luncheon was a beautiful moment in the chapter's history on the afternoon of Saturday, February 7.

The scholarship was named for Upsilon Alpha Omega charter members and educators, Mrs. Janice McGruder of Lawrenceville and Mrs. CaSandra Smith of Grayson. The honorees were in attendance and delivered heartfelt keynotes.

UAO is the parent chapter of Oglethorpe University’s Tau Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha.  Five Tau Pi Chapter members competed for the $1000.00 scholarship which was sponsored by The Gwinnett Pearls of Service Foundation, Inc., the nonprofit affiliate of UAO. Over 80 guests, including Oglethorpe University President Lawrence Schall, were in attendance and witnessed student Allyson Terry become the first recipient of this prestigious scholarship.  The McGruder-Smith scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Tau Pi chapter member each year.
