JULY EVENTS
•The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and John Hancock signed it on July 4, 1776. Fifty six men signed the document at later dates, one signer was Button Gwinnett for whom Gwinnett County was named.
•John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the United States was born on July 11, 1767.
•President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872.

LOOKING WAY BACK IN GWINNETT
•The Gwinnett Journal July 29, 1930: “The annual meeting of the stock holders of The Brand Banking Company was held on July 16, 1930. Judge C.H. Brand, R. Smith, W.H. Powell, and Sam Craig were reelected directors for the ensuing year.”
•From The Gwinnett Journal, July 30, 1903: “One of the most brilliant marriages of the season will occur this evening at 7 o’clock. The contracting parties being Miss Kister Born of Lawrenceville, and Mr. W.P. Johnson of Senoia.

RHODES JORDAN MIDDLE SCHOOL OPENS FOR CLASSES AUGUST 10, 2015
Principal Walker (right) moved from Benefield Elementary School to work at Rhodes Jordan Middle School. Walker is a graduate of Texas A &M where she earned a BS in Curriculum Instruction, an MS in Educational Administration and a PhD. She has 28 years of experience in education; she taught in Alief, Texas and in the Department of Defense School in Germany before coming to Gwinnett County.

Open House at Jordan Middle will be August 2 from 2-4.

CURRENT EVENTS
•The wedding of Beatrice Cole Southard and Charles Ernest Whitehead was on June 20, 2015 at the New Hope Christian Church in Lawrenceville. Congratulations to Bea and Charles who now live on Dogwood Drive in Lawrenceville.
•Holly Patterson of Lawrenceville made the spring 2015 president’s list at Georgia Southwestern State University.
•Dianne Alexis of Grayson graduated from Emory Law School in June 2015.
•The Gwinnett Historical Society will meet on July 20 at 7p m. The meeting will be held on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville and the program will be about the 1838 battle of the Creek Indians and presented by Fred Hybart.
•The Snellville City Council passed an ordinance requiring that those who wish to sell door to door must first apply for a permit.
•Brookwood High School students worked to collect $100,000 for charities during the 2014/15 school year. These funds donated to American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Childrens Healthcare Atlanta, Helping Hands and Hearts which aids those in the Brookwood community, St. Judes Childrens Hospital, Childrens Shelter, Family Promise and other charities.

SNAKES ALIVE and this long black one found in Lawrenceville was alive and wiggling when he (or she) was crawling across the yard. He was deemed nonpoisonous by the man who found him but to me anything that crawls, has no legs and is long and slender should be avoided. Summer time is when snakes like to sun.

Lunch will be at noon. Left to right: Alida Still, Elizabeth Cofer, Jo Brownlee, Annelle O’Kelley, Joyce Reed, Christine Blaney, Elaine Martin, Jannelle Walton, Gene Henson, Martha Frances Hutchins. Seated Omie Jackson who was a career teacher who spent many years teaching science and Spanish on the hill at at Central Gwinnett High.
