Lawrenceville – The United Ebony Society hosted its 16th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in the City of Lawrenceville. The event gathered crowds of people along Lawrenceville Highway as community organizations and locals marched in honor of Dr. King’s legacy.
The theme for this year’s parade was “What are you doing for others?” and served as a call to action for local residents and leaders to actively participate in community initiatives. The event began promptly at 10:00am as the United Ebony Society honored Mrs. Beauty P. Baldwin as grand marshal for this year’s parade.
A longtime member of many state and national education associations, Mrs. Baldwin was the first African-American female superintendent in the state of Georgia and served as superintendent of Buford County Schools for nearly 10 years. Mrs. Baldwin dedicated 40 years of her life in service to the community by educating the children of Georgia.
“Each year, we are honored to host this remarkable event for our community,” said Zachary Pratt, Event Coordinator of the United Ebony Society. “The United Ebony Society’s goal is to reach out to the community and make this an inclusive event that genuinely symbolizes the vision and legacy of Dr. King. We are continuously overwhelmed with the participation year after year.”
This year the parade focused heavily on calling the public to come together for the purpose of service. As illustrated in Dr. King’s vision for the world, the event speakers often discussed helping and serving others regardless of their background, culture, or situation.
Throughout the year, the City of Lawrenceville will host a handful of events like the MLK Day parade that honor a positive cause. Coming up in March, the City will host the Gwinnett Life Run – a 1 mile, 5K, and 10K race benefiting the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett and Gwinnett Young Life.
