Not all care is created equal

Snellville - Dr. William “Butch” Mulherin founded Athens Orthopedic Clinic in a small building on South Lumpkin Street in Athens in 1966.

Not all care is created equal

Fifty years later, the now 19 subspecialized orthopedic physicians, are honored to continue to provide superior care in 12 locations across Northeast Georgia.

AOC Snellville was established in the fall of 2010 and currently houses 6 physicians subspecializing in the following areas: Orthopedic Surgery, Foot & Ankle, Hand, Wrist & Elbow, Interventional Pain Management, Shoulder and Sports Medicine.  “Providing the most advanced and specialized orthopedic care close to home is exciting for our patients,” says Dr. Shane Smith, AOC partner and longtime Walton County resident.

athens ortho190We see patients with a variety of ailments that can be treated with and without surgery.  AOC provides cutting edge technology and advanced techniques in orthopedic care that allows the Physicians and Physician Assistants to perform procedures within the office, in our ambulatory surgery center and in the hospital.  In Snellville, we provide onsite imaging services for patients, which include, X-ray equipment, a state-of-the-art MRI machine, Fluoroscopy, and most recently an ultrasound machine.

With the recent addition of new equipment, AOC Snellville is now able to offer Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) injections. What is PRP?  PRP is plasma or liquid portion of blood that contains concentrated amounts of platelets (growth factors) after preparation which are very important during the healing process.  Laboratory studies have shown that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can potentially speed up the healing process in injuries such as, Achilles tendinitis, tennis elbow, tendon and ligament injuries and knee arthritis.

The Snellville location is also one of three AOC facilities that doubles as an urgent care center providing an excellent alternative to the ER accepting walk-in patients Monday – Thursday from 8:00am – 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am – 2:00pm.

50 years of specialized service is not special treatment- it’s the way Athens Orthopedic Clinic does business.
