As for the last five years, a delightful silent auction/raffle/basket fling was held for members and guests, along with the traditional salad luncheon to close out the year in style. And style there was, with a sea of beautiful hats and “fascinators” in the Red Ballroom! Many thanks were given to Historian Randi Minor who chaired the auction again this year.
Chapter Regent Kitty Watters presided, while State Regent Joyce Ball Patton was on hand to present the National Defense Distinguished Citizen Award to Gail McCabe. Ms. McCabe, a well-traveled and seasoned war correspondent, was thrilled with the award and gave special thanks to First Vice Regent Ann Story for her dedicated work on the nomination.
State Regent Patton addressed the chapter, encouraging them to continue their selfless service to others, always with the emphasis on patriotism, education and historic preservation. After the address, Regent Kitty Watters presented Mrs. Patton with a token of the chapter’s esteem, loyalty, and pride in her and her administration, in support of Mrs. Patton’s candidacy for Vice President General at Continental Congress at DAR headquarters in Washington, DC.
Our State Regent had many duties at the meeting on Sunday, as she also officiated at the installation of the Philadelphia Winn Officers and Executive Board for 2018 – 2020. The new Philadelphia Winn Chapter officers are Regent Ann Story, First Vice Regent Connie Rifkind, Second Vice Regent Lynn Jacques, Chaplain Sandra Fisher, Recording Secretary Traci Zierk, Corresponding Secretary Vivian Wiegand, Treasurer Anne Lockhart, Registrar Valerie Craft, Historian Mary Matthews, and Librarian Becky Davenport. After the installation, the traditional gavel was passed from Past Regent Kitty Watters to Regent Ann Story.
The chapter was also pleased to induct a new Junior member, Lauren Ann Schermerhorn. The current number of members in the chapter is 217. State Regent Patton will complete her term on June 24, when Melodye G. Brown of Rome, GA, will be sashed in Washington, DC, as the new Georgia State Regent. On July 21st a State Regent’s Tea will honor Ms. Brown at Oak Hill at Berry College in Rome, GA. It was a priority of State Regent Patton to increase membership—and she did—with a record 8,100 DAR members currently in Georgia!
Next week, May 28th Memorial Day, Philadelphia Winn Chapter will be honored to serve once again on the hospitality committee at the Memorial Day 2018 Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial. The event is held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Chapter members will provide cold bottles of water to thirsty participants and guests.
