SNELLVILLE (March 12, 2014) - A group of volunteers were lauded for their dedication to the city at the Snellville Tourism and Trade Marcy Pharris Volunteer of the Year award dinner Saturday.

The volunteers of the year were Gretchen and Kurt Schulz who are the founders of both the Snellville Farmers’ Market and the Community Garden at Snellville.

Also honored were Ileen Meggison of the Community Garden, Ronnie Bentley of the Gwinnett Sunrise Rotary Club, Marilyn Swinney of the Snellville Farmers’ Market, Kathy Emanuel of the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and Grace Clower of the Snellville Lions Club.

“Volunteers are the heart of our city,” said Kelly McAloon, Snellville Tourism and Trade’s executive director. “They volunteer because they want to make a difference in our community. Without the support of our volunteers we would not be able to have the great events and activities we have throughout the year in Snellville. The Farmers’ Market, the Community Garden and all events are run by volunteers who work endless hours to bring Snellville only the very best. We love our volunteers!”

The Schulz’s received a plaque and City Manager Butch Sanders presented the couple with a painting.

“The Schulz’s work as a team on most projects and are the founders of both the Farmers’ Market and the Community Garden. Gretchen Schulz serves as vice president on the Snellville Tourism and Trade Board,” McAloon said. “They both play a very integral role in supporting this community and making Snellville a better place to live. The Schulzs are very deserving of the Marcy Pharris Volunteer of the Year award.
