About Helping Mamas
Helping Mamas was founded in 2014 by Jamie Lackey who envisioned aligning her passion for working in the nonprofit sector with motherhood. Through her 20 years as a social worker, and as a mother of young children herself, Jamie realized there was a modern-day crisis facing Atlanta-area mothers: There was no coordinated effort to get baby supplies into the hands of the moms who need them most. Public Assistance Programs, while incredibly important, don’t allow for the purchase of critical baby items such as diapers and wipes. Jamie knew motherhood can be overwhelming under the best circumstances, and under difficult circumstances, it can feel impossible. The reality of the need ultimately came to a head when Jamie read case notes about a client who was reusing disposable diapers by washing them in a sink, and others who were using plastic bags as diapers. Jamie believed that moms with the means to help would step up to support those in need if they understood the challenges many Atlanta families were facing. In her words, “The one thing that unites us all, despite our backgrounds or socioeconomic status, is our love for our children.” With that, Helping Mamas was born, and in the past five years, it has quickly grown to serve more than 40,000 children through 100 agencies around the state of Georgia. The organization has seen such growth that it recently relocated to a larger, 9,000 square foot warehouse space to keep up with both the donations and demand of the city it serves.
