A global perspective on patient care

A global perspective on patient care

Before Jessica L. Malmad, M.D., M.P.H., entered medical school, she knew she wanted to be part of the solution to increase access to basic primary care services for the underserved.

Not only did she enter medical school with a master’s of public health in global health from Emory, she also spent years gaining experiences domestically and in Latin America in order to become fluent in Spanish and to help her better serve a Latin-American population.

“I wanted to be a primary care provider long before I entered medical school because my experiences in public health demonstrated the importance of educating people about prevention,” says Malmad, who is board certified in Family Medicine. “I want my patients to understand that they often have significant control over preventing the development of chronic diseases.”

For those already afflicted by one or more chronic diseases, Malmad often uses diagrams and pictures to explain the effect chronic diseases have on her patients’ bodies and how their medication acts within their bodies, in hopes that this knowledge will help them understand why taking their medications as prescribed can help them stay healthy.

Because she has a special interest in women’s health, Malmad says, “I look forward to working with women of all ages to educate them on things such as their contraceptive options and updated guidelines for cervical and breast cancer and other recommended screenings.” Malmad also knew that she desired to work in a setting that enabled her to interact with people from all over the world. “Stone Mountain Primary Care is a great location for me because of our community’s diversity. Every culture seems to interpret and manage illness and disease differently, and I look forward to both learning from my patients in this regard and also teaching them what I can about health.”
