About 1,250 Gwinnett County seniors presented with home and personal care supplies for the holidays

Lawrenceville – Gwinnett County Health and Human Services continued its annual gift bag program that helps local seniors in need during the holidays by working with partners to donate home and personal care items.

Gwinnett County Health and Human Services Lawrenceville Senior Center receives approximately 150 gifts for senior participants at their annual holiday party on Dec. 15. Health and Human Services and Friends of Gwinnett Seniors partnered with the community to provide approximately 1,250 local seniors home and personal care supplies for the holidays.

Of the estimated 1,250 seniors served, 900 received services from Health and Human Services, 300 received services from the six local cooperative ministries, 70 received services from the Lawrenceville Housing Authority, and 50 reside in extended-stay hotels. The donations included new blankets, towels, socks, gloves, detergent, soap, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toilet paper, paper towels, non-perishable food and more.

Health and Human Services created the program more than 15 years ago when it recognized an increase in senior needs during the holidays. “Our seniors really appreciate how the community comes together to show that they care about them during this time of year,” said Centers Manager Vivian Gaither.

Friends of Gwinnett Seniors, a nonprofit that raises funds for Gwinnett senior programs., began sponsoring the program two years ago. This year, the organization received donations and volunteers from more than 10 community partners. Some partners donated money, some donated the home and personal care supplies requested, and some volunteered to pack and deliver the bags to seniors. Friends of Gwinnett Seniors also distributed donation boxes around Gwinnett County for individuals to participate in the program.

Gwinnett County Health and Human Services partners with the community to provide and connect service opportunities that help improve the health and well-being of a growing and diverse Gwinnett County. Its four facilities offer wide-ranging social and senior services and house various partners.
