Acclaimed Farmer’s Market kicks off June 7

SNELLVILLE – Things sure have changed since the city’s Farmer’s Market opened for the first time five years ago.

Then, there were just over 30 vendors. When the market opens its 2014 season June 7, there will be 55.

From left, Gretchen and Kurt Schulz are ready for the fifth year of the Snellville Farmer’s Market to open June 7.

The Farmer’s Market, which was voted the top market in the state and is on the nation’s Top 100 Most Celebrated Farmers Markets list by American Farmland Trust’s I Love My Farmers Market Celebration, will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. each Saturday through Sept. 27 starting June 7.

Kurt and Gretchen Schulz have been organizing the market since its inception and say they have seen the event grow each year – and so has the acclaim it brings the city. “We feel like it has kicked off this community’s pride,” Kurt Schulz said. “That’s what makes up proud,” Gretchen Schulz said. “We love seeing people come to the market, laughing with friends and neighbors. That’s what means a lot to us.” The Schulz’ and the 12 volunteers who run the market work virtually year round recruit nearby farmers, secure entertainment and make sure the produce is meticulously screened for quality and fit SafeServ guidelines.

The market, which operates under the umbrella of Snellville Tourism & Trade, has grown to feature low-volume music acts, animal adoption programs and new this year, a celebrity chef cooking demonstration featuring four local chefs the second Saturday of each month. “You just feel this atmosphere of community,” Gretchen Schulz said. “That’s what makes it more fun than going to the local grocery store.” As always, this year’s market will have a delicious variety of vendors offering fruits, vegetables, baked goods, mushrooms, herbs, spices, farm fresh meats and cheeses, local honey, kitchen products, flowers, plants and coffees. And if the chef’s samples aren’t enough food, numerous vendors feature breakfast sandwiches, BBQ and a variety of other foods.
