Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Reminds Students to Request School Attendance Form for Summer Driver Testing

As summer approaches, Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Rob Mikell reminds students needing to test for an instructional permit or driver’s license over the long vacation to obtain a “DDS Certificate of Attendance Form” from their school administration before the end of the school year.

Students planning for an on-the-road test will also need a Georgia Alcohol Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) certificate of completion.

DDS Certificate of Attendance Forms must be signed and notarized from the student’s school and presented at the time of applying for a permit or Class D driver’s license. Typically, the form is valid for one month. However, the Certificate of Attendance Forms issued in May 2014 will be accepted until September 30, 2014.

“Please plan ahead if you are testing for your permit or license over summer vacation,” said Commissioner Mikell. “In addition to the required forms, there are several driver education tools for both students and parents at the DDS website, www.dds.ga.gov.”

All applicants under the age of 18 and not enrolled in school must provide a GED diploma, high school diploma, or an attendance form from the student’s local Board of Education if enrolled in an approved home school program.

In addition to the Certificate of Attendance, successful completion of the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) is required to obtain a road test. ADAP is typically taught in both public and private schools as part of the 9th grade Health curriculum. An Internet option, eADAP, is available to students who are home-schooled, have moved to Georgia from another state, were absent from school when the ADAP courses was taught, or who need the course during the summer months.

SecureID, new homeland security requirements, also apply to those obtaining their first Georgia driver’s license, permit or ID card. Our teenage customers can expect to present documentation to establish identity, including a legal name change, citizenship or lawful presence in the United States, a Social Security number, and two documents to prove their residential address.

For residency, most students may present a letter from their school plus a parent’s valid license/ID which has the same address. To be sure you bring all the necessary documents, please create and print a Custom Document Checklist, listing the exact documents to bring on your visit to one of our customer service centers, by visiting the DDS’ website, www.dds.ga.gov and clicking on the blue box titled “Secure Driver’s License and ID”.
