Eastside Medical Center performs first robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement in Gwinnett County, Georgia

Eastside Medical Center utilizes the latest robotic technology to transform joint replacement and offer each patient personalized surgical experience.

Eastside Medical Center is the first hospital in Gwinnett County, Georgia to perform a robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement with the Mako System. The surgery was performed at Eastside Medical Center’s main campus hospital in late August. This latest advancement in joint replacement surgery transforms the way total knee replacements are performed.

“Robotic-assisted surgery is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed by providing each patient with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy,” said Stephen Higgins, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Eastside Medical Center. “Using a virtual 3D model, the robotic-arm allows surgeons to create each patient’s surgical plan pre-operatively before entering the operating room. During surgery, the surgeon can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic-arm to execute that plan. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across Eastside’s joint replacement service line to perform total and partial knee replacements.”

The Mako robotic-arm assisted application used at Eastside Medical Center is a knee replacement treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. This technology enables surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased accuracy.

In celebration of the addition of the Mako System to Eastside’s robot family, the hospital is engaging all middle school students in the communities they serve to help make history at Eastside and throughout Gwinnett County by naming the robot. All middle school students in Gwinnett and Walton counties are invited to enter Eastside’s “Name the Robot” art contest.

The robot’s new name will be unveiled at the hospital’s robotics community open house and “Name the Robot” awards ceremony on October 25th. At this time, the winning student will receive a $100 cash prize, a personalized trophy, and a $500 donation for their school. Attendees at this event will also have the opportunity to “drive the robot” with a hands-on experience under the supervision of Eastside Medical Center’s team of orthopedic surgeons. All “Name the Robot” entries are due by October 1. For more information, you can visit EastsideMedical.com/NametheRobot

“We are proud to be the first hospital in Gwinnett County to offer this highly advanced robotic technology, “ said Trent Lind, Chief Executive Officer at Eastside Medical Center. “This addition to our orthopedic service line demonstrates our commitment to provide our community with the highest level of care and the most advanced medical technology.”
