Family Discovery Day is a free event where you can bring your entire family and participate in interactive activities and instructional labs that help you find and connect with the progenitors who made it possible for you to be alive and part of this world.
The event is sponsored by the Lilburn 2nd Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
You may not know your ancestors well, but as you find them, document your heritage, and learn their stories, you will experience a connection and strong bond with them. This is powerful when shared with your children.
New York Times writer Bruce Feiler suggests says that “one of the very best things we can we can do for children is teach them about their ancestors and give them the identity-strengthening blessing of a real ‘family narrative.’ Kids who feel a family identity larger than themselves and who know something about the lives of their ancestors are more confident and more resilient than those who don’t.”
Mark your calendar today and on May 13, grab your kids and attend the event. There will be kid-friendly activities, instruction on how to search online for your ancestors, and ideas for documenting your family history.

About Family Discovery Day
In 1970 Steve Brandau became interested in his ancestors. His grandfather, George Brandau, who served in the German army as a butcher, emigrated from Germany in 1905. He settled in the Owyhee Mountains in the western part of Idaho and Steve remembers every fall when George used his butchering skills making sausage and preserving meat for the winter.
George Brandau died in 1968 before Brandau was interested enough in his ancestors to find out more information about the Brandau roots in Germany. All Steve knew is that George’s father was named Christian and they came from Harley, Germany. All searches for vital records of Christian Brandau were in vain.
In 2000, Steve was pleasantly surprised when an Internet search yielded a picture of Christian Brandau as a member of the Lutheran Church’s leadership, the Presbyterium Council of Elders, in 1900.
It was not until Family Search came on line that Steve was able to find the vital information he was looking for on Christian Brandau. In 2005 he found his vital records. Christian was born on October 5, 1846 and married Anna Elizabeth Weiderhold on April 6, 1874.
Through Family Search, he was connected to the Evangelische|Kirche’s (Lutheran Church) Landeskirchliches Archiv in Kurhessen-Waldeck, Germany and with their help was able to find 4 more generations, discovering that Christian Brandau was named after his grandfather.
Of the discoveries, Steve says, “Although I had the names of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, I didn’t know anything about them. Now I feel close to not only them but my grandfather’s brothers and sisters as well. I have learned a great deal about my ancestors. For instance, my great-great-grandfather, Johannes Brandau, served as church clerk responsible for all tithes and donations for over 30 years. This gives me a greater reason to serve my church and community.”
