General Aviation Enhancements coming to Briscoe Field

General Aviation Enhancements coming to Briscoe Field
By Staff Reports

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Jan. 21, 2014) – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to spend $218,924 for control tower improvements at Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville. The project will replace existing glass and install a backup generator, new weather and radio equipment, handrails and lightning protection.

Three companies were low bidders on different sections of the contract: FS 360 LLC, DPS-Infrastructure Monitoring Systems Inc. and Wolen LLC.

The Board awarded a second contract for 1,100 square yards of concrete pavement with drainage for an outdoor airplane wash rack that complies with current stormwater regulations. The Dickerson Group Inc. was the low bidder at $185,161.

Commissioners also agreed to perform an environmental assessment for proposed runway rehabilitation and taxiway extension projects. Federal Aviation Administration grant funds would pay 90 percent of the $82,000 cost, with another five percent each from the Georgia Department of Transportation and Gwinnett County’s airport renewal fund.

“These improvements will make Briscoe Field safer and more efficient for our current general aviation tenants as recommended by the airport privatization citizens review committee nearly two years ago,” said District 4 Commissioner John Heard. “We are simply protecting our investment, not expanding the facility, and I am committed to keeping Briscoe Field as a general aviation facility.”
