Gwinnett Approves First Streetlight Petition

Commissioners on Tuesday approved using $21,693 in 2009 SPLOST funds to install streetlights in the Stratford Square subdivision near Lilburn. Each property owner will pay a share of the total estimated $2,438 in annual operating costs on their property tax bill.

The subdivision off Bethesda Church Road is the first to take advantage of a new petition process the Board of Commissioners approved last month. Gwinnett has required developers to install streetlights in new subdivisions since June 1997. Now residents in older areas can petition the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation for street lighting with installation costs to be funded by the 2009 SPLOST. A majority of property owners must agree to pay the electricity and maintenance costs.

Commissioner Lynette Howard, whose district includes Stratford Square, said “Police tell me lighting is an environmental factor that can help to reduce crime, so I am thankful older neighborhoods now have the opportunity to add streetlights to their communities.”

Interested residents can get more information about the petition process from Gwinnett DOT’s Community Relations office by email at DOTCommunityRelations@gwinnettcounty.com or phone at 770.822.7400.
