Filming is complete at this location and crews have moved out, returning the Gwinnett Tech campus back to the business of workforce development and higher education. From Thursday, Oct. 22 through Monday, Oct. 26, cast, crew and executives of the Warner Bros. Pictures’ drama “Sully” used portions of The Busbee Center (Building 700) for the filming of the movie that will depict the story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger.
While this is the first time the campus has been used as a movie set, The Busbee Center is home to the Cisco Auditorium and the Siemens Banquet Hall, as well as academic classrooms, computer science labs and culinary arts labs, as well facilities for continuing education and customized training for business and industry.
According to Patrick Mignano, location manager for the movie, when he saw photographs of the auditorium in The Busbee Center at Gwinnett Tech, he was impressed with how much it resembled the actual hearing rooms of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). In addition to transforming the auditorium into an NTSB hearing room, the location team transformed one end of the banquet hall into an air traffic control room. Mignano praised the faculty, staff and students at Gwinnett Tech, saying that everyone was warmly welcoming, very supportive and great to work with on the project.
“This was an exciting opportunity for the college to be showcased and support our state’s focus on the film industry, which is of great importance to Georgia’s economic development,” said Gwinnett Tech President Dr. Glen Cannon. “Gwinnett Tech offers customized solutions to many local, regional, national and international companies. We can now add the film industry to that list.”
Gwinnett Tech is one of several locations used in the movie that began principal photography in New York on Sept. 28. Filming has also taken place in North Carolina, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career. The film stars Oscar winner Tom Hanks as Sully, and is under the direction of Oscar winner Clint Eastwood. “Sully” also stars Aaron Eckhart as Sully’s co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney as Sully’s wife, Lorraine Sullenberger.
