Do you suffer from baggy or puffy eyelids?

Baggy eyelids do more than keep you from looking your best. Your droopy eyelids can block your vision and keep you from seeing everything you should! As we age, the eyelid skin, just like other skin in the body, loses its elasticity and stretches.

David Carlin, MD

The orbital septum (the membrane that holds the normal fat that cushions the eye) also loosens allowing the fat to come forward making the eyelid look heavy and bulky. Sometimes the levator muscle (the muscle that lifts the eyelid) gets weak so the lid itself droops down (ptosis). Age and heredity are the main causes. Smoking, sun exposure, poor nutrition, seasonal allergies, manipulation of your eyelids during makeup removal or excessive stretching during contact lens insertion and removal also contribute to the problem.

While the cosmetic industry offers a myriad of creams and serums claiming powers over time and gravity, surgical outcomes are far superior when compared. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes the excess skin and displaced fat around your eyes to provide a truly immediate improvement.

If you find that the appearance of your eyelids bother you, or if you feel that they are interfering with your vision, our highly specialized Ophthalmologists and dedicated surgical counselors can inform you about what options are available based on your specific needs and lifestyle. And don’t think that women are the only ones having Blepharoplasty to boost their appearance, a large portion of the procedures performed at CarlinVision are for men as well.

One of the most important things to consider is the surgeon who will perform the procedure and what type of training and experience they can offer you. While plastic surgeons work on all areas of the body, ENT doctors on ears, noses and throats, dermatologists on skin and oral surgeons on the mouth, ONLY ophthalmologists concentrate exclusively on the eyes and eyelids, which is different and unique from all other parts of the body. If an uncommon complication occurs after eyelid surgery, other surgical specialists refer their patients to CarlinVision for care and treatment.

Eyelid surgery is a life changing procedure, and you should carefully consider your available options before a commitment is made. If you think you might be interested, give us a call. We offer free consultations where we walk you through the process from deciding if eyelid surgery is right for you, to what to expect before, during and after surgery. In some cases, your eyelid surgery may even be deemed medically necessary due to interference with your vision. We can assist with filing your insurance and any testing needed.

If your vision is bothersome contact CarlinVision at 770.979.2020 or visit CarlinVision.com. Our Board-Certified Ophthalmologists can determine the reason you are not seeing as clearly as you should. If you have a cataract, we will teach you about the condition and all your treatment options.
