A few days before cataract surgery, you will start antibiotic drops to decrease your risk of infection. Cataract surgery is done one eye at a time starting with the eye that bothers you the most. Then typically after two weeks the cataract is removed from the other eye. The day of your cataract surgery, you will be given anesthesia to help relax you. Cataract surgery consists of making a small incision, removing the natural cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens. The procedure takes about 15 minutes, is virtually painless, and can even be done with a laser. Since the incision is so small, no sutures are needed. The only restrictions are no heavy lifting and no rubbing the eye for one week after the surgery to allow the incision to heal. After the surgery, your surgeon may cover your eye with a patch before you go home. The next day, your surgeon will have you return for a follow-up visit. During your visit, the patch will be removed and your surgeon will check and make sure the eye is healing properly. Recovery is usually quick with a very low complication rate. The eye recovers and adapts surprisingly fast. The majority of patients return to clear, brighter vision within a matter of days. Once you’ve had your cataract removed, they will never come back and you will never have to have cataract surgery again. Up to 30% of patients may develop clouding of the posterior capsule, termed a secondary membrane or secondary cataract, after cataract surgery. This is very easily and successfully treated with an outpatient laser procedure.
