Will a blade be used during my cataract surgery?

Depending on the type of procedure you choose, a blade may be used. There is however a better advanced laser technology option.

Dr. David Carlin

If you choose to do Blade Free Laser Cataract Surgery, a femtosecond laser will be used to perform the incisions. With conventional cataract surgery, incisions are made using a traditional blade.

Carlin Vision is one of a few practices in the Atlanta area offering this breakthrough procedure. With the blade free laser, cataract surgery is more precise and accurate while increasing safety. With blade free laser cataract surgery, surgeons are able to plan and perform surgery to exacting, individualized specifications with more effective removal. The laser pre-softens the cataract allowing removal using less ultrasonic energy making it gentler on the corner which allows for faster healing time. Any pre-existing astigmatism is corrected with the laser.

While every doctor that performs cataract surgery is highly skilled and have great results, any time computer guided advanced technology can be used, it will be recommended if you are a candidate. Everyone’s eyes share the same basic anatomy; but your eyes are unique when it comes to their curvature, size and depth. The laser allows our surgeons to perform cataract surgery that is personalized for your unique eyes. This is because the laser takes high-resolution images of your eyes yielding precise data to perform your surgery with exact specifications. Many patients report clearer vision two weeks after surgery and reach peak vision around two to four months.

While blade free laser surgery is the leading technology in cataract surgery, it may not be for everyone. When you are ready to proceed with your cataract surgery, discuss your options with one of our seasoned surgeons to find the right fit for you.
