Caring for the entire family

Caring for the entire family

Family practice was a natural choice of specialty for Davina Hayes Dansby, M.D., of the Snellville office of Rockbridge Family Medicine. “I became interested in women’s health when I rotated through the obstetrics/gynecology portion of my education, but I discovered that I could care for women and their entire families, as a family practitioner,” she says.

“I like getting to know my patients and their families.”

Although Dansby spends time educating her patients about their illnesses and steps they can take to become and stay healthy, she also learns from her patients. “I’ve always been interested in nutrition as medicine and the relationship between nutrition and our health, so I share that information with patients,” she says. For example, since cinnamon can lower blood sugar, she suggests her diabetic patients add it to oatmeal or coffee. “My patients learn well because they often come back to me with articles they’ve read that include information I’ve not seen before.” Dansby reviews the articles to see if they have scientifically-based, valid recommendations, and then adds the new information to her own tips for patients.

Treating the whole family gives Dansby extra information that she can use to develop preventive care plans for children who may be susceptible to the high blood pressure or diabetes their parents have. She adds, “This specialty is as close to the old-fashioned country doctor as you’ll find today.”
