What is a Hospitalist?

Here at Eastside we have an extensive and dedicated Hospital Medicine program. Our Hospitalist team manages patient care and treatment on a daily basis. However, we often get the question, “What is a Hospitalist?”

Dr. Omar Jalil, Director of Hospital Medicine

A Hospitalist is a physician dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. With special training and experience, they have the expertise to manage the care of a patient from the time they are admitted to the hospital until they are discharged. Hospitalists are devoted to patient care, conducting thorough medical evaluations in order to formulate and implement appropriate treatment plans. They also collaborate and communicate with specialty physicians when needed during a hospital stay, as well as with their patient’s primary outpatient physicians through the dis-charge process.

Because a Hospitalist only cares for hospitalized patients, they spend their days in the hospital and are available to tend to their patients as needed. Most Hospital Medicine practices provide on-site care 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

Perhaps the most important role of a Hospitalist is communication, keeping their patients and patient’s loved ones up to date with all of the details of inpatient care. A Hospitalist knows that an understanding of diagnosis, prognosis, and medical care is essential to the overall wellbeing of their patients.

With the increasing medical complexity of hospitalized patients, Hospitalists stay up to date with the latest medical advancements and guidelines to ensure they are delivering consistent top-notch care to the patients they serve throughout the community.
