Healthy, Happy Friends - October 2013

What a wonderful success the Alzheimer’s Garage sale was.  If you remember it occurred on September 6 -7 at the South Campus meeting room. In those two days, sales of assorted household items together with the splendid lunch on Saturday netted almost $14,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.  This was truly a win-win situation.

Those of us that contributed our unwanted stuff to the sale gained a lot more storage place and may have picked up some practical items they found pleasing while the Association benefit in its fight against this terrible condition.

Another popular sale is coming up on Friday, October 18 at the North Campus of Eastside Medical Center near the Auxiliary office. All proceeds from this sale will be donated to Food Coops.  You already know what tremendous cooks H2U members are, So come and bring your best baked goods and try some of the mouth-watering treats your neighbors have baked.

Cathy Stokes has a Fall Leaf Riverboat Cruise coming up on Thursday, October 24. I went on this cruise last year and thoroughly enjoyed the music, the scenery and the commentary, not to mention the games and the dancing.  You might want to call now and get your name in the pot for this year’s trip.

H2U will not be sponsoring our annual Diabetes Fair this year.  Instead we will partner with the Eastside Medical Center at the Gwinnett County Diabetes Fair on Saturday, October 26, 8:30 to 3:30 PM at the Gwinnett Civic Center.  This is a free event and is open to everyone, so mark your calendar and be sure to attend.

Robbie Allen took his wife, two kids and his mother down to Atlanta to ride the SkyView, the new giant Ferris Wheel that rises 200 feet into the air.  His mother and one of the kids were a little hesitant about going up so high.  But he says they all survived in good spirits and had a great time. The ride was smooth whether you were going up or going down and they found it easy to move around to see from all sides in the gondola.  He recommends the trip as a fun thing to do for Halloween.

This is a great time of the year for open air markets selling flowers, decorations and fall vegetables such as pumpkins and squash.  Be sure to check out these markets in several cities –Snellville, Lilburn, Lawrenceville, and Loganville and Grayson.   The vegetables make nice decorative displays and they are so good to eat and so good for you.

Wishing pleasant days and improving health to Dorothy Smith, Lottie Teichert, Phyllis Williams and William Regan.  Happy birthday wishes go to Alithia Mech, Benita Miller, John Pair, and Mary Ruth Parham.
