•The Pilgrims sailed from England in the Mayflower on September 16, 1620.
•The Battle of Chickamauga in the Civil War began on September 19, 1863.
•President McKinley was shot by an assassin on September 6, 1901.
•Japan formally surrendered on V-J Day September 2, 1945.
•The Gwinnett County Courthouse burned on September 10, 1871.
•On September 11, 1872 an Act of the Legislature created a Board of Commissioners for Gwinnett County.
•The first grand reunion of horse-swappers ever held in Georgia was in Lawrenceville on September 8, 1899. There were about 4,000 in attendance.

CURRENT EVENTS
•D. Glen Cannon has been named as the next President of Gwinnett Technical College. Dr. Cannon began his tenure as president on September 1, 2014. Dr. Cannon earned a doctorate of education with a concentration in occupational studies from UGa, he received a master’s of business administration from Mercer University and a bachelor’s of business administration from the University of West Georgia.
•Georgia Gwinnett College awarded more than 100 bachelor’s degrees during the 2014 summer graduation held at Gwinnett Center.
•The KidStuff Ladies Brunch will be held at the Georgia Club in Statham on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 11 AM. Jean Holley will be the speaker. Reservations may be made by calling 770-466-5610 or 770-985-1189.
•Lawrenceville Elementary School had extensive renovations during the summer of 2014. Improvements included painting, landscaping and the installation of a sprinkler system.
•Alice McCabe who worked diligently at the Gwinnett Historical Society for many years recently celebrated a big birthday. Alice is now a resident of Pruitts Nursing Home, 788 Indian Trail, Lilburn 30047.

ROBBIE SUSAN MOORE
FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION FUND RAISING EVENT
The fifth annual fund raising event for the Robbie Susan Moore Foundation for Education will be held on September 20, 2014. The fund raiser will be a fashion show entitled “On the Red Carpet at the White House” and a silent auction will be include at the event which will be held from 4 until 7 pm at the Salem Missionary Baptist Church Heritage Hall located at 4700 Church Street in Lilburn, Ga. All money raised will fund scholarships. In 2012 two students were awarded $1,000 each and in 2013 and 2014 four students were awarded $1,500 each. Dog Days are periods of hot sticky, uncomfortable summer weather which occur between July and late August. Exactly how and when they occur and how long they last varies somewhat from year to year. The ancient Greeks gave dog days their name because the time of year occurs about the same time that the dog star Sirius rises with the sun.
