IMPORTANT JANUARY EVENTS
•January 13, 1733 the British Ship Anne arrived in Charles Town, South Carolina. On the ship were the first English settlers with James Oglethorpe. They later went to Savannah to establish the 13th colony named Georgia.
•Four Presidents of the United States were born in January: Millard Fillmore, 13th President was born in January, 1800; Richard Nixon, 37th President was born on January 9, 1913; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President was born on January 30, 1882; William McKinley, 25th President was born on January 29, 1843.
•Civil Service System was established in 1883.
•Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
•The Colonial Theater in Lawrenceville opened January 21, 1916. •January 1, 1963 students began attending Lawrenceville Elementary School on Button Gwinnett Drive.
•The News-Herald, January 2, 1913: “Noah Parker is Chief of Police and J.R. Wages is night watchman. Both earn $60 per month.”
•The News-Herald January 23, 1919: “Mr. E.T. Hopkins sold his picture show to Fayette Sims who will use the place as a garage.” CONGRATULATIONS From the Gwinnett Journal, January 21, 1936: “Robert Gholston, Jr. is making a good record in Stillman Institute at Tuscaloosa, Alabama.”
CANNING PLANT IN THE 1950’S
In the 1950’s, Gwinnett schools that had canning plants on the campus were Bethesda, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Norcross, Snellville, and Sugar Hill. In the summer those canning plants were busy for people brought locally grown produce in to prepare and can the items for later use. In the winter some would bring in beef and pork to be canned. Those canning plants were busy when gardens were producing. The cannery was operated by the Vocational Agriculture teacher working out of the high school. All canneries had a manager who did much of the work. (see photo below) •An article in the January 15, 1908 News Herald reported Gwinnett County has 4,000 sheep; 12,000 cattle; 4,000 mules and 15,000 hogs.
CURRENT NEWS
•The funeral service for Gwinnett native Floyd Cofer was Thursday December 19 at the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church. Floyd was born in Grayson and he was a graduate of Grayson High School. Floyd’s father had a general merchandise store in Grayson. Floyd and Elizabeth Melton Cofer were married for 67 years and they were the parents of Al and Anne.
•Jerry Denaple of Buford has been honored with the Delco Remy/ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Electronic Technician of the Year. Jerry is a Master Truck Technician. He is employed by Publix Supermarket in Dacula.
