I LOVE New Lawrenceville

I LOVE New Lawrenceville
By Rodney Camren

Most people in downtown Atlanta claim they can’t go outside the Perimeter because the air is too thin! If it is too thin in as they claim, then that must be why people are patient, kind and loving to one another in Gwinnett and New Lawrenceville.  All 16 of these small towns in Gwinnett County are known for small hometown sensibility and loving one another. February is the month of Love. There are valentines, hearts and roses for all those in Love. But the New Lawrenceville community shares another kind of Love with its residents, business owners and visitors.

I LOVE New Lawrenceville

New Lawrenceville has always been about “Bringing Community Together”. Over the past seven years we have promoted with LOVE the local Lawrenceville community to everyone. We have promoted with LOVE local churches and their events. We have promoted with LOVE the City of Lawrenceville government, their rules and regulations, their Mayor & City Council Meetings and Tourism & Trade events as well. We have promoted with LOVE the new startup businesses in the community and have been sadden when they leave or go out of business. We have promoted with LOVE the neighborhoods and efforts to clean up and make them better. We have promoted with LOVE Georgia Gwinnett College and their continued expansion into the Lawrenceville community. We have promoted with LOVE many other non-profit and networking organizations in Lawrenceville. We have promoted with LOVE the history of Lawrenceville along with Mary Long through the New Lawrenceville Trolley Tours. We have promoted with LOVE local charities through giving proceeds from the New Lawrenceville Spring Green Festival held in March each year.

This year with LOVE the New Lawrenceville Business Networking Group has decided that the proceeds of the 4th Annual Spring Green Festival held in downtown Lawrenceville will be benefiting the Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation and specifically be directed to a dedicated ambulance for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The ambulance cost is roughly $180,000.  An anonymous donor is willing to match our proceeds dollar for dollar towards this cause up to $90,000.  To New Lawrenceville this is more than love on the behalf of the silent donor. We can’t thank that person enough for contributing such a gift.

What is NICU? The Gwinnett Medical Center website states “it is dedicated to healing, supporting you, and your sick little one.  Our NICU is a Level III unit that provides highly specialized intensive care for about 800–1,000 critically ill and premature newborns every year.  Care is provided by board-certified neonatologists (pediatricians who have received further training to care for sick newborns), nurse practitioners (specialized masters and doctorate-prepared nurses), clinical nurse specialist, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and physical therapists. This collaboration makes for excellent monitoring, diagnosis of problems and support of vital functions beyond that available in a general pediatric unit. It also allows for the overwhelming majority of sick newborns born in this part of greater Atlanta and Gwinnett County to receive state-of-the-art care close to where their parents live.

Among the services in the NICU are:  Prenatal consultation for high-risk pregnancies,  NICU team for high-risk births, Specialized transport of sick newborns from other hospitals to the Gwinnett Medical Center Women’s Pavilion, Collaboration with pediatric cardiologists, pediatric neurologists, pediatric neurosurgeons and pediatric surgeons to care for your baby,  Sometimes things do not go exactly as planned. Should this happen, it is important to know that your newborn will be in the best hands possible, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Find an OB/GYN now, or call 678-312-5000.

Beads of Courage is a special program that honors the milestones achieved during a patient’s unique journey. The Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is proud to have been the first hospital to offer this therapeutic program to preemie families. All babies born prior to 34 weeks gestation are given a string and beads to spell their first name. Then, for every test or treatment a newborn receives in the NICU, he or she receives an additional bead. These babies and families will have a special strand of beads that is specific to their care and represents their courageous journey in our NICU.   This program was instituted by and continues to be sponsored by the physicians and nurse practitioners of Gwinnett Neonatology, PC.”

New Lawrenceville LOVES our friends at GoWaiter.com who were the first to stand up helping to Champion & Sponsor our festival this year.  Tom will tell you this cause is very close and dear to his heart since he has triplets who were part of the NICU.  He gets the importance of a dedicated ambulance for this part of the hospital. Tom is the owner of GoWaiter.com a partner with many of your favorite local restaurants to provide home and business delivery of delicious food — for the same price as takeout.  GoWaiter was created to provide hungry consumers with the ability to order the food they want, from the local restaurants they want and have it delivered to them at their home, office or hotel for a small delivery fee and within an average of 45 to 60 minutes. By providing a variety of prepared meal choices along with the convenience of delivery, we bring a better quality of life to everyone we touch.  Tired of the same old takeout? Bored with the slim pickings for delivery in this town? http://www.GoWaiter.com

CHEW CHEW!!! Lawrenceville’s wonderful Train Depot area is getting on board with the revitalization of the Lawrenceville Community.  Each year during the New Lawrenceville Trolley Tours (held in May and now in its 6th year) take a ride through Lawrenceville’s Train Depot area.  We stop right at the Lawrenceville Train Depot which has been renovated by the City of Lawrenceville and is home to The Chew Chew Café. Tour Guide Mary Long tells of the days when what is now 550 Trackside was a grain, cotton and holding station for goods being loaded and unloaded onto the trains.  She also tells of how trains would pass through town with soldiers heading to war.  The townspeople of Lawrenceville would come to waive as the trains and soldiers passed through.  And as they did a lot of times soldiers would throw out pieces of paper with their addresses on them for the townspeople to write to them.  Mary states that a lot of times this would be the last letter those boys would ever get and they came from the wonderful people of Lawrenceville, Georgia.   The Chew Chew Café is Fine Southern and American home cooked meals prepared by Gwinnett County natives, Linda and Landy Henderson.  The Chew Chew Café is located in what is being coined now as Market at the Depot.  Market at the Depot celebrated its First Anniversary with THE FIRST ANNUAL DEPOT DAZE on Friday, Oct. 26th and Saturday, Oct. 27th. A fun-filled day was had by all who attended. In addition to our “regular” vendors, we had new vendors and some returning vendors from last year. The “Regulars” surprised Linda Nash with a gift basket as a token of appreciation for all she and her family have done this past year to make the Market a success and fun to be a part of. We enjoyed fresh popped popcorn, hot boiled peanuts, fresh produce, and of course, our own Chew Chew Cafe featured Fall favorites such as Barbecue, Brunswick Stew, Caramel Apples and more! The “Kid Zone” featured Face and Hair Painting, as well as games and prizes. The “Market” is proud to have raised $125.00 with their “Pumpkins for The Cure” sales and cash donations; proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for finding a cure for breast cancer. All in all, it was a great day and enjoyed by all. This year’s Valentine’s Celebration at The Chew Chew Café  will be $12.00 per person. There will be live musical entertainment. Reservations are required. Please Contact us at 770-963-4294 or linda_Henderson@bellsouth.net The Menu will include Entrees:  Beef Tenderloin with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms & Chicken Wrapped Puff Pastry.  Sides Dishes are:  Mashed Potatoes, Grilled Asparagus, Green Beans with Candied Walnuts & Steamed Carrots.  Your Salad choice is Spinach Orange Salad.  Breads are Yeast Rolls with Honey Butter and desserts will be Chocolate Delight & Cheese Cake Mouse with Fresh Berries.  Now, that’s a sweetheart meal.
