It’s a fun way to learn about water safety at the pool. Regular pool admission fees and pool rules apply, and we ask that children be accompanied by an adult.
Our aquatic centers offer top-notch facilities with play structures at all leisure pools and state champion lifeguards on duty. And thanks to resident input and voter support of SPLOST programs, we have year-round aquatics centers throughout the county at these parks: Bethesda, Bogan, Collins Hill, Mountain Park and West Gwinnett. Additional outdoor pools opened on Memorial Day weekend at Best Friend, Collins Hill, Dacula, Lenora, Mountain Park, Rhodes Jordan and West Gwinnett parks.
County residents get in for $5.50 or less and discounted FUNCARDs are also available. We offer swim lessons, water exercise, synchronized swimming, scuba diving instruction, and lifeguard training. Most facilities are also available to rent for birthday parties, reunions, and other private events. Class listings, rental information, hours of operation, and rules are all posted online at www.gwinnettparks.com.
The start of summer is also a good time to review water safety rules for pools, Lake Lanier, or any time you’re near water. Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, whose paramedics are often the first responders, tell me that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children under age four.
Swim lessons for your kids and CPR training for you are really good ideas.
Although 90 percent of parents say they supervise their children at the pool, many also admit to being distracted by talking, eating, reading, or taking care of another child. It only takes four to six minutes underwater for kids to suffer irreversible brain damage, making it vitally important to actively supervise children in and around water.
Gwinnett Parks and Recreation offers swim lessons for those as young as six months to adults. Group, private and semi-private swim lessons are available at many levels to benefit everyone from beginners to advanced swimmers.
Swimming and aquatic-related activities play a vital role in good physical and mental health and certainly enhance your quality of life. Have a great summer!
