LAWRENCEVILLE – As part of its commitment to the national Stop the Bleed campaign, Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) today announced that it has donated life-saving tourniquet kits to Georgia Gwinnett College, Infinite Energy Center and Coolray Field. Purchase of the kits was made possible by the generous support of the GwinnettMedical Center Foundation.
The noted entities represent three of Gwinnett County’s most prominent public facilities which are collectively visited by hundreds of thousands each year. Tourniquet kits offer the ability to provide immediate treatment to individuals facing bleeding emergencies.
Injuries that result in heavy bleeding may be life-threating and often the greatest threat comes from the loss of blood. Thus, it is important to control bleeding as quickly as possible through application of a tourniquet.
The Stop the Bleed campaign was launched by the White House in 2015and is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped and empowered to help in bleeding emergencies before professional help arrives.
“As a busy trauma center in metropolitan Atlanta and north Georgia, we see cases where tourniquets can and do save lives,” said Gina SolomonRN, Trauma Program Manager at GMC. “While we never want to see anyone suffer an injury, we know accidents happen and hope by equipping the college and the areas we can help ensure more positive outcomes for trauma care patients.”
The donation of tourniquet kits is part of GMC’s ongoing effort to support the community through public outreach initiatives that promote health and wellness for all citizens.
“We are truly grateful to GMC for providing the tourniquet kits,” said Burk Buchanan, Director of Emergency Management at Georgia Gwinnett college. “With nearly 12,000 students and more than 1,000 faculties and staff, our institution is one of the fastest growing colleges in the southeast. That growth places increasing importance on our ability to address emergency situations, and the tourniquet kits from GMC fill one vital area of need.”
Earlier this year, GMC teamed up with the Gwinnett Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Gwinnett Police Department to offer life-saving tourniquet application training for its 5,000 employees and interested citizens.
