Retirement and estate planning are on most people’s “to do” lists. Finding the right planner figures largely upon need.

For Jerry Hansen, filling the niche for those in their 50’s and 60’s allows him to work with clients who find themselves in a variety of investment situations. For Jerry, that variety is part of what makes the job a pleasant challenge each day. 

“I began investing personally in 1983 and have been a registered representative since then,” says Jerry. “I really enjoy retirement planning and helping customers assess their choices.”  With several major companies offering early retirement to employees, Jerry has found that customers often come to him in order to determine whether a lump-sum or pension is the best option. “I help them compare their options,” says Jerry. “I really enjoy educating clients so that they can make informed decisions.” 

In addition to being accessible to clients, Jerry thoroughly enjoys living in Gwinnett County. As an assistant youth football coach at a local private school, Jerry is grateful for the opportunity to give back to his community. “I played high school and college ball and coaching these kids is great fun,” says Jerry. 

Jerry and his wife, Mendy, first came to Atlanta in 1996 along with the rest of the world during the year of the Olympics. They fell in love with the southeast, the proximity to the beach and mountains, and the SEC football. “I don’t lose sleep over it, but I do have a good time with it,” says Jerry. “I like to root for the underdog on any given weekend.” 

Whether he is evaluating football stats or investment options, Jerry applies the same small-town values he learned while growing up in Wisconsin. “In the financial planning process, you have to be upfront with your clients,” says Jerry. Being upfront generally means his services are fee-based. “Higher commission products can create conflicts of interest that I like to avoid that for my clients.” 

Finding the best investments means watching trends, reading market reports, and researching the economy. “I spend an enormous amount of time on those issues,” says Jerry. “Helping people navigate very tricky or volatile markets is very satisfying.” Skimming the highlights isn’t Jerry’s style, he prefers to know as much as possible about an investment before offering advice to a client.

Finding a balance for each client by providing good information in order to make the best informed decisions is highest on Jerry’s “to do” list each day. Offering his advice, research, and years of experience are natural extensions of his commitment to stick to his small-town values in a global investment world.
