Councilman Tom Witts, who spearheaded the construction of the memorial in front of City Hall, said the film, entitled “Freedom is Never Free: The Story of the Snellville Veterans Memorial”, is about 30 to 45 minutes long and will be shown each hour from 4 to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers in City Hall, 2432 Oak Road, on a big screen.
The film, produced by BR Media Solutions, was created using footage taken as the memorial was being built, during the May 24 ceremony and from interviews with 40 veterans whom the film crew spoke to the day of the dedication.
“The videographer approached me a month before the memorial was completed and said he’d like to make a donation to the memorial – a video of the completion of the memorial as well as interviewing some of the veterans, those involved in the building of the memorial and those who came for the dedication,” Witts said.
One interview was conducted with a 90-year-old veteran from Lawrenceville who shared for the first time a moving story about his service in World War II, Witts said.
The event is open to the public as seating is available.
Also on July 4 there will be the Snellville Tourism and Trade’s Star-Spangled Snellville Fourth of July Celebration on the Towne Green outside City Hall. The event begins at 3 p.m. and concludes with one of the largest fireworks displays in the Southeast.
