Written by local playwright and school teacher Margaret Edson, “Wit” tells the story of English professor Vivian Bearing Ph.D. who is a terminally ill cancer patient and a member of an experimental treatment study. Throughout the show, the audience will become a part of her journey through flashbacks of her past as a student, teacher, and her diagnosis.
“Wit” is being directed by Dawn Berlo who has directed such acclaimed dramas as “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “The Miracle Worker” as well as this summer’s award winning production of “Cabaret”. “Everybody has somebody in their family or their immediate circle who have been touched in some way by cancer” says Dawn Berlo about why she chose “Wit”. “After reading the script I felt it was something that the people of the area should experience.”
Under her direction, Dawn has longtime actress Nancy Powell (a schoolteacher) as Vivian Bearing and Evan Weisman (retired doctor) as Dr. Kelekian heading up the cast. Local favorites Dusty Britt and Rebecca Carrico, NLT alumni Katie Bates, Pam Duncan and Jeff Haynes, and newcomer (to New London Theatre) Mary Elizabeth Dailey round out what has already become a family in their own right. Berlo notes “As it turns out, we have 3 teachers and 2 doctors in a cast portraying mostly doctors and teachers.”
