Lawrenceville First Baptist Church – First Book Club 165 Needs Volunteers Throughout October

Lawrenceville First Baptist Church (LFBC) – First Book Club 165 needs volunteers to sort and pack children’s books at the Hooper Renwick School, located at 56 Neal Boulevard, Lawrenceville, Georgia, every Saturday in October from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Lawrenceville First Baptist Church – First Book Club 165 collects new and gently used children’s books to distribute to the four elementary schools in the Central Gwinnett cluster school community.

Vicki Aiken, leader of the book ministry at LFBC, saw a need for children to have books available to them during the summer months. “Through the tutoring ministry at our church, we noticed some of the children didn’t have access to books to read during the summer,” Aiken said.

Research shows that children, who lack access to books during the summer months, experienced a sharp decline in their reading levels, referred to as the “summer slide.”

Elementary school students will be able to pick out up to ten to twelve books to take home at the end of the school year.Elementary school students will be able to pick out up to ten to twelve books to take home at the end of the school year.Aiken outlined the book ministry’s outreach mission and goals. “We will have between 80,000 to 90,000 books arriving in about two weeks. We will be distributing books to all four elementary schools in the Central Gwinnett cluster in May, 2018. At the end of the school year, our goal, for every child in all four schools, is to pick out and take home up to ten to twelve books for summer reading. We hope, that after we sort these books, we will be close to meeting our goal.

Books by the Pound (860 Duluth Highway, Suite 110, Lawrenceville, Georgia, 30043) is also working with us.  People can drop off books of any kind to the store and tell them they are designated for First Book Club 165. The store will give the book club credit for any books they can use. We will be able to exchange the credit and use it to purchase additional children’s books.”

Volunteers of all ages are invited to participate on any given Saturday in October.
