The format of the tournament is similar to that of the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup played by members of the PGA. The tournament was named “The Presidents Tournament for the Van Britt Cup” in honor of the longtime owner of Summit Chase, Mr. Van Britt.
Since then the Van Britt Cup (“VBC”); has taken on a life of its own. Twenty men ages 51 and younger and twenty men ages 52 and older with handicaps ranging from scratch to twenty-five, compete in a two-day tournament that combines the match play formats of Foursomes (alternate shot), four-ball (two-man best ball) and individual matches. The tournament has taken on a life of its own. There is not monetary reward, no prizes, just a perpetual trophy inscribed with the year, the first initial and last name of the winning captain and the initials of the winning team.
Each year at the annual awards banquet, Terry Britt, the MGA president since our inception, names two men as captains of their respective teams for the upcoming year. The teams are the Statesmen (young guys) and Elder Statesmen (more experienced/old guys). The captains this year were Al Coughlin for the Elders and Todd Lawson for the Statesmen.
The Elder Statesmen captured the trophy from the Statesmen on December 13th for the first time in several years. After the first day matches the score was tied but the more experienced played shinned in the individual matches to seal the victory by a margin of 17 to 13. This tournament has proved to be one of the highlights of the golfing year at Summit Chase. Members plan their vacations around the MGA tournaments in order to secure points that enable them to qualify for the tournament. It is indeed an honor to play in this tournament.
If you would like to play on one of the finest courses in the area, be part of a tremendous group of guys, and participate in a tradition like no other; the Summit Chase MGA invites you to join our family.
