Nearly 10,000 students arrive for fall semester at GGC

Lawrenceville (August 19, 2013) Georgia Gwinnett College welcomed nearly 10,000 students to campus for the first day of classes for the 2013 fall semester. The college had expected about 9,500.

Amid celebratory balloon arches and raindrops, nearly 10,000 students began their first day of fall semester classes today at Georgia Gwinnett College.
While this is not a significant increase over last fall’s 9,400 students, the college is preparing for a significant increase next year when its long-awaited Allied Health and Sciences building opens. Not only will the building provide additional laboratory, classroom and office space, it will house GGC’s new baccalaureate program in nursing.

“We are currently operating at full capacity,” said Dr. Stanley “Stas” Preczewski, interim president. “We have carefully maximized the use of our facilities to enroll the most students possible. In fact, in a recent study by the University System of Georgia, GGC’s space utilization was rated by far the highest in the system, about twice that of the institution with the next-highest score.”

Once the new building opens, the college is expected to accommodate nearly 11,000 students. Further growth will require investment in new facilities, as well as additions and renovations to existing facilities. This growth will be managed strategically, Preczewski said.

Georgia Gwinnett is the college of choice for Gwinnett County students, as it enrolls more Gwinnett residents than any other institution. About 70 percent of the college’s student body hails from Gwinnett.

This year, GGC received a record 8,000 applications from prospective students. About 22,000 prospective students had indicated an interest in attending GGC, based on data from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Due to its growth, the college has scheduled its application deadlines earlier, to allow enough time for processing. The deadline for the 2014 spring semester is Nov. 15 and the deadline for the 2014 fall semester is May 1, 2014.

GGC has scheduled an Oct. 19 Open House for prospective students. For more information and to register, visit http://www.ggc.edu.
