Local Student Receives Academic Scholarship

(Jefferson, Ga) — Jackson EMC recently awarded graduating Mountain View High School senior Stephen Jenkins a 2014 Walter Harrison Scholarship. The son of Brent and Carol Jenkins of Lawrenceville, Stephen will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology this fall and pursue a degree in electrical engineering.

Jenkins is a member of a number of organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and the Academic Team, among others. He has earned a long list of honors such as Salutatorian of the Class of 2014, Star Student, UGA Certificate of Merit, Eagle Scout and AP Scholar with Honor. “We want to help students help themselves,” says Ernest A. “Chip” Jakins III, Jackson EMC president/CEO. “Secondary education obviously benefits the student, but it also benefits the community if we can lessen the economic burden for their families who are living and working alongside us.”

The Walter Harrison Scholarship, named in honor of a rural electrification pioneer, is awarded annually to deserving high school students and college undergraduates who serve their community, possess exceptional academic ability and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship can be applied to any accredited two or four-year university, college or vocational-technical school in Georgia, and is funded by Georgia’s electric cooperatives, including Jackson EMC, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Georgia Rural Electric Supply Corp.
