Naming process kicks off for new school opening in 2016

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has begun the school district’s process to name the new elementary scheduled to open in Norcross in August of 2016.

The school will be located at 123 Price Place, Norcross, Ga. 30071. The school system invites Gwinnett community members and organizations to participate in the school naming process by providing their input.

Suggestions from the public will be gathered by a school naming committee which has been formed within the Norcross Cluster. The committee includes one school staff member and one parent and/or community member from each school in the area of the new school. This committee will develop a list of recommended names to submit to the superintendent. The committee recommendations take into account available research and follow the school system’s policy for naming new facilities. In making their recommendations, the committees give consideration to:

•Individuals who have made a significant social contribution (If an individual’s name is proposed, only the last name would be considered the official name.)

•Names of communities served by the school

•Roads

•Landmarks

•Geographical locations in the proximity of the school

Information on how to submit names for consideration, along with the necessary form, can be found on the school system’s web site at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us. The deadline to submit public input on potential names for the new schools is September 8, 2015.

The school naming committee will review and submit its recommendations on September 11. CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks will review the recommendations and submit his recommendation to the School Board for its consideration at the scheduled meeting on September 17, 2015.
