Norcross High School cross-country and track runners served as the torchbearers alongside the city’s own Mayor Craig Newton, and carried the torch to Norcross City Hall, where it will be held on display along with panels telling Gwinnett’s 200-year history until November 26th.
City residents and staff awaited the runners, cheering them on from the Finish Line at City Hall. A reception was held in the City Hall lobby for all in attendance.
Like the torch of the Olympic Games, the bicentennial torch represents goodwill and the connection between communities. The relay represents the journey that Gwinnett County has undergone in its 200 years, from 1818 to today, from a largely agrarian community to one of the fastest growing, most diverse counties in the Southeast.
Runners from Gwinnett County Public Schools have carried the torch to various historic sites, public facilities and cities in Gwinnett throughout the bicentennial year of 2018, and will continue to do so until culminating at the County’s 200th Birthday Celebration on December 15, 2018, at the Infinite Energy Center.
