Peachtree Elementary School to host third annual Sport Stacking competition

Peachtree Elementary School’s Sports Stacking Club will play host to the 2018 World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) HOTlanta Regional Sport Championship. The competition will be held at Summerour Middle School on February 17 starting at 8:30 a.m.

Sport Stacking is an individual and team sport that involves stacking plastic cups in specific sequences in as little time as possible. The cups are specially designed to allow for faster times. Participants of sport stacking stack cups in pre-determined sequences, by aligning the inside left lateral adjunct of each cup with that of the next. Sequences are usually pyramids of 3, 6, or 10 cups. Players compete against the clock or another player.

This is the third year in a row Peachtree Elementary has hosted the tournament which will feature children, youth, and adult competitors from both U.S. and international clubs. World record holders will be present alongside beginners and masters level stackers.

Peachtree Elementary’s stacking club is led by Michael Senf, the PE instructor at the school. Senf has advanced this sport in the school and has developed two students who have earned spots on the acclaimed TEAM USA. Senf also founded the stacking club at Pinckneyville Middle School.

Sport Stacking helps students develop bilateral proficiency and equal performance on both sides of the body. By increasing bilateral proficiency, a student develops a greater percentage of the right side of the brain, which houses awareness, focus, creativity, and rhythm. Stacking helps train the brain for sports and other activities where the use of both hands is important, such as playing a musical instrument or using the computer. Sequencing and patterning are also elements of sport stacking, which can help with reading and math skills.

This tournament is a WSSA 2018 AAU Junior Olympic Games Qualifier . The sport will be one of 19 that will draw more than 15,000 total athletes. It’s the largest multi-sport youth event in the country!
