It is the first Guns & Hoses Charity Softball game and it will be played on Briscoe Park’s new softball fields with activities starting at 12 p.m. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
The Guns (SPD) will be playing for the Amanda Riley Foundation, an organization named after Snellville resident Amanda Riley who passed away after a battle with cancer when she was a teen. The Hoses (GCFD) will be playing for the Gwinnett Fire Employee Benevolent Fund.
“Our officers and staff are excited to participate in this worthwhile event,” said SPD Chief Roy Whitehead. “We appreciate the working relationship with the Gwinnett County Fire Department and their willingness to engage with our City and all who worked so hard to bring this to fruition.”
There will be fire trucks and police vehicles including a SWAT truck and Snellville’s Cop Cab. Concessions will be available from the Masonic Lodge.
There will be free admission for those who bring a canned food item, which will be given to the Give Hunger the Boot effort which benefits the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op.
“The ‘Firefighters from Gwinnett’ softball team is looking forward to participating in a friendly competition against our counterparts in law enforcement at the Snellville Police Department,” said GCFD Capt. Tommy Rutledge. “Both departments are playing for a worthy charitable cause. I have always said that when it comes to softball against fire and police, it’s anybody’s match. It’s been said that police can run, they just can’t hit – and firefighters can hit, they just can’t run. Come out to the park and bring your family and friends for a great game and time of fellowship with those who serve and protect our community.”
The park on Lenora Church Road will celebrate another first as it will host the Canine Carnival from 12 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17.
The event is presented by the city and the Gwinnett Humane Society with proceeds benefiting Gwinnett Animal Control.
Residents are encouraged to register their dogs in events like the Peanut Butter Lick-off and a Popcorn Toss.
Registration fee is $5 until Oct. 16 and $10 the day of the event.
There will also be vendors, a DJ, a raffle to benefit GAC, free nail trimming, pet photography, food trucks and more.
