snell-trophy 190The Snellville Police Department was awarded third place in Category 3 of Governor’s Challenge conducted by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

SPD competed against other agencies across the state with 25 to 50 sworn officers. The contest is based on a department’s excellence in education, enforcement and public service announcements.
“It is an honor to receive this award and well deserved by the men and women of the Snellville Police Department who are committed to occupant protection, removal of impaired drivers, preventing texting and driving and other initiatives to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities on our roadways,” said SPD Chief Roy Whitehead. “Our officers are dedicated to keeping our roadways safe.”
Last year the department won first prize in the competition and have won numerous times in years prior.

Along with a trophy, the SPD was awarded $2,000 in GOHS “bucks” which allows the department to shop for equipment for use in traffic safety at the GOHS online store, Whitehead said.
Lt. John Tainter submitted the application on the department’s behalf, providing the information to GOHS regarding SPD’s efforts.
