SNELLVILLE (March 11, 2014) – When Ken and Jim Chen opened their new restaurant Rice Box, they said they wanted to give back to the community.

The brothers wasted little time doing so as they donated $336 to local charity Give Hunger the Boot.

Rice Box, located at 2624 Cindy Lane off of Highway 78, officially opened Saturday with a ribbon cutting event complete with a traditional lion dance. In attendance were local dignitaries including the mayor and council. Also at the ceremony was a table at which visitors could win raffle tickets. $168 was collected at the event and the Chen brothers matched it for a total of $336 to go toward Give Hunger the Boot.{gallery}2014rapidgalleries/rg0314/ricebox0314{/gallery}

“We feel that it is important to give back to our community not only as a business but also as individuals,” said Ken Chen. “It feels good when you can help someone, knowing that you are making a difference in someone’s life! We want to make a difference and hope to make the world a better place a little bit at a time.”

Give Hunger the Boot was created by Snellville Councilman Dave Emanuel and his wife Kathy. The charity works with local businesses to develop and promote fundraisers for charities.

“Even though the economy has recovered a bit, a lot of people in are still unemployed or underemployed,” Emanuel said. “That situation has significantly stressed the resources of the Southeast Gwinnett Food Co-Op, which provides food and financial assistance to needy families. When Rice Box learned about Give Hunger the Boot through the Greater Eastside Chamber of Commerce, they thought his restaurant’s ribbon cutting event would be an ideal way to get involved.”

Emanuel said Rice Box has also become a permanent drop-off site for food donations collected by Give Hunger the Boot and distributed to the Co-Op.
